When I look back on my life in reflection, I realize that at times I was wandering aimlessly.  The strange thing is that during these times I felt like I was making good choices and moving forward.  Now I know I was with those who did not understand me and I did not understand them.  They did not understand my search for my ‘self’. I did wander aimlessly until I moved into my heart and began to love my ‘self’…then my life began to have more purpose and meaning. I began to meet people with whom I could “sit under a tree in blossom”…and embrace the light!  I began my Happiness Circles that became my Peaceful Way gatherings and experienced greater peace and love.

Don’t wander aimlessly!
by Rumi

My heart, sit only with those
who know and understand you.
Sit only under a tree
that is full of blossoms.

In the bazaar of herbs and potions
don’t wander aimlessly
find the shop with a potion that is sweet
If you don’t have a measure
people will rob you in no time.
You will take counterfeit coins
thinking they are real.

Don’t fill your bowl with food from
every boiling pot you see.
Not every joke is humorous, so don’t search
for meaning where there isn’t one.
Not every eye can see,
not every sea is full of pearls.

My heart, sing the song of longing
like a nightingale.
The sound of your voice casts a spell
on every stone, on every thorn.
First, lay down your head
then one by one
let go of all distractions.

Embrace the light and let it guide you
beyond the winds of desire.
There you will find a spring, and nourished by it sea waters;
like a tree you will bear fruit forever.

• Ghazal (Ode) 563, from
Rumi’s “Divan-e Shams” (“The Collection of Shams”), by Kolin and
Mafi, and by Professor Arberry:
–Translation by Azima Melita Kolin
and Maryam Mafi

Today I welcome guest writer, Julie Redstone, “Movements of the Heart”

MOVEMENTS OF THE HEART

Julie Redstone
The human heart exists in beauty and in limitation.  Its beauty lies in the fact that it is capable of great love, great tenderness, and great vulnerability.  It’s limitation lies in the same fact.  Yet, the limitation of today is the expansion of tomorrow, as the heart begins to feel a greater Love moving within itself, and as it awakens more fully to its own power of expression.

The love that the human heart calls its own, the love that it seeks in order to satisfy its desires and hold at bay the sense of loneliness that would exist without it – such love is only a small portion of what the human heart is capable of.  Because of its need for self-protection, and because it perceives itself to be small when, in fact, it is quite large, the human heart fastens on the one love that it hopes will nourish its life and fill its empty spaces, instead of the larger Love that would restore to it the experience of its own wholeness.

The heart has been taught to expect certain things of life and to give certain things to life.  In this sense, it is influenced by current perceptions regarding the nature of relationships and the nature of love, and no longer knows its own potential.  It no longer realizes the vastness from which it came.  Such a heart often goes through its days confined within a small sphere of contact with others, not perceiving its relationship to the greater Whole, not perceiving the great Heart of humanity that beats within its own.  It therefore, understandably, seizes upon the experience of ‘falling in love’ with one other as the central experience of life, because this event lets it know more fully than anything else, what it means to be truly alive.

Yet, even this experience of love which is so profoundly moving and enriching to life can also be limiting.  It can limit the knowledge of what love IS, believing it to be embodied within one relationship, whereas in truth the intensity of love, the depth of love, the joy of love, and the tenderness of love, are part of what it means to be alive. These qualities belong to Love itself, and to the deeper nature of the heart as it brings its essence into everyday experience.

With a more awakened heart, it is possible to be deeply in love with life.  It is possible to deeply love one’s own being.  It is possible to become identified with love to such a degree that one wants to extend it everywhere.  These possibilities exist but must be awakened within the human heart.  They exist, but they must be perceived as real.

The relationship with a beloved partner is one expression of limitless love. Such a relationship is often singled out among all others and asked to compensate the self for what is lacking in the rest of life. However, love is not meant to be confined within such small quarters.  For the deepest bonds of love between two who love resonate with the great harmonic of the universe.  They resonate with the music of Creation.  They are part of that Creation, and can only find their truest and most complete expression when experienced as part of a greater Whole.  Indeed, a complete partnership in love will seek to reach out to others – will seek to reach out to the world in order to bless it.  Part of this naturally happens through bringing new life into the world – through children and the contribution they make to the future.  Another part happens through the extension of love directly – through one’s conscious participation in the great circle of Life.

Many who love today still believe that love is limited and that there is not enough to go around.  Therefore, one must concentrate on the few who are the closest – on children, parents, family. and friends.  This perception of love is based on a heart that does not yet know itself.  It is based on past learning, not on what actually is. The perception of the smallness of the human heart arises out of the history of separation from the wellspring of Infinite Love and the Spirit that dwells within all.  Nevertheless, this well remains, and the water is still there.  And those who look for it will find it within and can allow it to enrich the life that they lead.

For each human heart holds within itself a spark of the Divine.  And each human heart is capable of embracing not only others, but its own existence as well. This is the love out of which the human heart has been fashioned which contains the Divine within the human. This is the love that is meant to encircle the earth, and to restore and nourish all of life.

Valentine’s Day encourages us to share our love with our Beloved ones. It began as a day for lover’s to express their love (and the florist shops to sell roses and cards), but it has evolved into a day that brings the importance of taking time to tell others how much we love them and how important they are to us.

For my husband and I, it is still a ‘lovey’ day with cards and chocolates.  This morning 2e went to Georgian Bay where the sun was shining brightly on the icy banks along the shore and it was so beautiful.  We soaked up the beauty. Then we drove up Blue Mountain and out into the rolling countryside.

So Valentine’s Day is a day where we can express our love and be so grateful for our family and friends who share their love with us. It can also be a time for reflection and meditation.

Would you like to try a simple meditation with me?

Meditating is a simple process.  It requires only a quiet place, concentration on your breathing, slow relaxation of all your muscles and allowing your mind to quiet.  If you like, play some quiet, soothing music.

As today is Valentine’s Day in your meditation visualize a beautiful pink flower and allow yourself to feel the love that the flower was sending to you.  Try this short meditation and fill your heart with love for yourself and for others. I will send some to you too!

Heart Flower Meditation

Begin by focusing on your breathing…in and out, in and out.  With each breath in and out, feel all the muscles in your body from your head to your toes begin to relax…more and more.  Allow your mind to quiet and allow yourself to drift into your heart space…deeper into your consciousness…a space of peace, love and stillness…see beautiful pink light…and a pink flower that slowly opens its petals and sends love to you…your heart fills with love…enjoy the present moment….listen…

Poet’s have been writing about the power of love for centuries. Here’s is a moving poem about love by Attar..

Intoxicated by the wine of love
From each a mystic silence Love demands.
What do all seek so earnestly? ‘Tis Love.
What do they whisper to each other? Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts.
In Love no longer ‘thou’ and ‘I’ exist,
For Self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul,
Behold the Friend; Incomparable Love.
He who would know the secret of both worlds,
Will find the secret of them both, is Love

Farid ud Din Attar– translation Margaret Smith –

From “The Jawhar Al-Dhat  “

Attar was one of the Attar 1119 -1220 most ancient and highly revered poets of Persia. He inspired later Sufi poets, such as Rumi and Hafiz

Happy Love Day…May love fill your heart everyday.

As our days gradually lengthen, we have the opportunity to move into our winter season to spend quiet moments of reflection and to open to more light in our heart. As I meditate, I envision a beautiful golden light flowing through my body, mind and spirit. The winter solstice reminds us that light is ever shining. On days that seem sad and dark, I move within to my quiet place within my heart and spirit lightens me.  Even if I tap into this source of love for only a few minutes, I feel better.

So let us welcome light and love into our hearts today…

A welcoming light

A uniting of cells

Movement between worlds

Receiving and birthing

Allows for transitions

Comfort eases change

Weightless waves flow

All light becomes one

Jane Rosalea Brown

May light lift and keep you well. Enjoy the spirit of the season!

I am reposting an article by David Ison called “Embracing Me”.

When world events shake us to our core and our fears surface,  we can find solace and peace through prayer and meditations that bring us to greater knowing and acceptance of who we are and our life purpose.  As we look within, breathe deeply to relax and focus, we discover a place of quiet and peace where we begin to experience our inner sanctuary where we connect to our inner Self and spiritual Essence.

No one else can do this for you.  You must take time to relax, quiet your mind from your daily thoughts and fears, and move into a space where you listen, where you feel loved, where you know you are connected to all life.  It is really amazing and an exciting moment when you reach this place of consciousness within your heart.

When we feel a sense of love within, we can begin to bring it forth into our outer world.  When our actions come from our heart. Presto! We transform and our life transforms and heals on all levels! Enjoy David’s thoughts and experiences that led him to ’embracing me’.  May you fully embrace the love that you are!  Peacefully, Jane

Embracing Me

By David Ison – Stories 3.9.14 Embracing Mbeautiful-waterlily-images-for-profile-share-2-09ac3

All my life I have felt and have been surrounded by a presence. Unseen, yet always there, I have, at various times in my evolution subscribed this presence to being God, the Universal Life force, the pattern, the Unity Function, the Essence of Creation itself.

Amazing things have always happened to me throughout my existence. I have died, come back to life, I have made fortunes and lost them, sacred texts have fallen into my lap, undiscovered knowledge has been consistently revealed. My mind has always been pointed into a multileveled, multilayered and multifaceted SINGULAR direction. Always stretching and reaching for another layer of the TRUTH. Pure objective truth. I have been driven by this unseen force to uncover, to discover and recover this Essence of truth. And I have indeed, been protected every step of the way. Guided through minefields, healed and thrust out again and again, never veering, always and forever rolling, moving toward the true beginning of all things, toward the shape of the creative essence itself.

Today, I stand here in awe of this protection, of this gift of immeasurable wealth. I feel its presence stronger than ever, gaining in strength and solidity, gaining in gravitational magnetism, gaining in its natural state of wholeness. This presence is not God, is not the devil, is not the divine Essence. It is not external, it is not coming into me from some outside source. In fact, the presence is something even more amazing, more pure, more Essential. IT IS ME. That’s right, this presence is my whole self, my entire being, my Essence, My Essential Self. It is within me and is always there, ever present, like the beating of my heart. Selflessly keeping me safe, endlessly guiding my steps along the path, continuously giving me life, love, wisdom, strength and understanding.

It is time to honor the Essential Self with the full recognition of its presence. Time to give back. Give back to ME. Time to celebrate the Essence that is always there. The Essence that is in resonance with all things holy, with all things true, with all things unchanging and with all the elements that make up the Creative Pattern of the Essential Unfolding nature of EVERYTHING.

Let us stand in the embrace of the Presence of the Essential Self, let us lose the shackles of the endless stream of metaphorical designs and designations. Let us free our minds from the chains of desire and the human tendency to continuously, endlessly seek confirmation from without, from the external. Let us finally, now and forevermore, look within, welcoming OURSELVES and nothing else, into our hearts, our minds, our spirits and our souls. Let us learn to listen to this eternal Essence within, hearing the songs it has to sing, hearing the stories it has to tell and at last, let us learn to receive its wisdom and its truth.

The Essential Self is the protector. It is the healer of wounds. It is the spinner of the web of our own individual lives. It is our sense of wonder and our endless source of creative energy, our very imagination. Lastly, let us simply sit. Sit quietly. Sit with an open mind and open heart and simply receive and then with a calm and a quiet mind, let us simply learn to say THANK YOU.

My gratitude to David Ison for sharing this article.

May you embrace yourself each day and share the beauty within. Peacefully, Jane

After a busy family weekend, I am enjoying the quietness of our home this morning.  Above is a picture along a nearby river dam where I often sit and meditate.  Some days when the wind is still, the river reflects to me a beautiful picture of stillness.  In meditation, I can experience moments of this kind of bliss.  When I saw this scene of the trees reflecting on the water, it reminded me how beauty is reflected back to me in so many ways.  Sometimes I miss the beauty if I am caught up in ‘doing’ things, but if I am aware…beauty is everywhere.

When we tap into the beautiful things in nature, art, people, animals, books…our consciousness opens to a new view that helps to heal any sadness or pain we may be experiencing…if only for a few moments.  These precious glimpses of ‘beauty’ are the first steps to awakening our heart to love and Self-mastery.

Begin to see the reflections of your true Self, your true ‘beauty’ by taking a few moments in silence to meditate. In meditation, open to receive and rejoice in the beauty of who you truly are.  Awaken to your heart space within, a space filled with unconditional love, peace and compassion.  Embrace the light of love. Move beyond self doubt, fears or regrets. Feel the joy of accepting love, healing, courage, strength, and unity with all.  Enjoy your sanctuary of love within…view the reflection of your beauty…

“Still is your mind

Open is your heart

It is not anywhere, not anyone

It is lightness, love of Self

To radiate your love to others

To share your joy every moment

To be one in

With All”

How beautiful we feel in the presence of love.  Our spirits are lifted and the world becomes a gentler and more compassionate place.  The beauty of love is that not a word has to be spoken.  When it is present, all who are in a space where love is shared have the opportunity to embrace it and to fill their hearts with it.  Then the cycle of love occurs as love flows out from those hearts who have received it and a new space is created where love continues to flow, to heal, to bring joy in infinite ways. Create a loving space wherever you journey today!
