Guest Article ~ 7 Simple Mantras for Healing and Transformation

woman meditating

Everything in creation is, at its most refined level, sound or vibration. Every tree, every flower, every part of your body has its own unique vibration. Even the qualities you express in your life such as happiness, joy, abundance, and love are vibrations.

When you are healthy, happy, and vibrant, these vibrations are harmonizing with each other like a magnificent cosmic symphony. However, if the vibration of any area becomes distorted, the harmony breaks down, leading to a lack of wholeness and some discomfort in your life. Many forms of healing are based on knowing the correct sound or vibration and reintroducing it into that area, whereby you can restore the balance, harmony, and comfort once again.

Nature itself is full of sounds—birds singing, the wind blowing through the trees, waves breaking on the beach, innocent children laughing, and so many more. Unfortunately, for much of our time nowadays, we separate ourselves from nature. When you spend time in nature, listening to these sounds, your physiology becomes harmonized with the rhythms and flow of nature.

All traditions of the world have used sound for healing, whether the beating of a drum, a bell, a gong, or a sacred chant. The ancient Vedic Tradition of India has taken this a step further, exploring and refining the use of sound over thousands of years to formulate it into the Vedic Science of Mantras.

Mantras are specific sounds or vibrations whose effects are known. When either chanted aloud or repeated silently, they can create a desired effect in any area of your physiology or life—for healing, transformation, and inner awakening. This is, of course, a vast subject and there are mantras for everything from curing snakebites to spiritual awakening. It would take a whole lifetime to master this wisdom; however, we’ll discuss a few of the more practical uses here.

Japa

Japa means the repetition of a mantra so it encompasses all uses of mantras. However, Japa is most commonly associated with a fixed number of repetitions of a mantra. Usually a string of beads, known as a Mala, with a set number of beads would be used to keep count—one repetition per bead. Traditionally, most Malas have 108 “counter” beads and a “guru” bead used to indicate where to begin and end. Sometimes shorter malas with 54 or 27 beads can be used with longer mantras.

Using the Mala will often involve making a commitment. Let’s say you have a particular obstacle in your life. Knowing the mantra to help harmonize that situation, you might choose to repeat it 108 times (one Mala) for the next 30 days.

Deity Mantra

There are literally thousands of deities in the Eastern traditions, each associated with a different attribute and each having its own mantra, which invokes that attribute. For a Hindu, repeating one of these mantras would be a form of worshipping that deity. However, for those not so religiously inclined, the deities and their attributes should be viewed in their subtler context, as archetypal energies.

These energies are all within you, either dormant or in a state of imbalance or balance. When they are dormant, you may experience a lack in that area; when out of balance, you may experience some disruption; and when in balance, you may enjoy harmony and fulfillment.

By repeating one of these mantras, you can activate and harmonize its effects in all areas of your life. A simple deity mantra is:

  • GAM (gaam) – For removing obstacles and blockages and bringing wisdom in your life.

Healing Mantras

As we’ve discussed, everything is sound and any discomfort or disease is a distortion of the sound in some area of the body. Reintroducing the correct sound helps to restore the harmony in that area. Healing mantras are normally repeated with the attention in the area of discomfort—or, you could say, directing the vibration to where it is needed.

There are some powerful healing mantras, which are best learned from a qualified teacher; however, here are some of the simpler ones:

  • For the sinuses: Mmmmm
  • For the ears: Nnnnnnn
  • For the eyes: Eeemmm
  • For the throat: Gaa Gha
  • For the jaw: Yaa Yu Yai

The vowels sounds can also be used for healing.

  • Aaa
  • Eeeee
  • Eye
  • Ooooo
  • Uuuuuu

These are non-local, meaning you can chant one of them and direct its vibration wherever you choose.

Chakra Mantras

Consciousness is transforming into matter at every point in the Universe, but is more lively in certain places. On the earth, we call these energy centers a vortex; in the body, we call them chakrasChakrasaren’t physical, but you can imagine the main seven in the body located along the spine. Each reflects different qualities in your life. For most people, their chakras are blocked or stuck, diminishing the flow of energy supporting those particular qualities or over-emphasizing them.

By putting your attention in the area of each chakra and chanting the mantra associated with it, you can begin to enliven the chakra and release its qualities in your life. There are several different sets of mantras for the chakras, the following set is for general everyday use. It’s important to do the whole set rather than just focusing on one or two. Starting with the lowest (first) chakra, bring your attention to that area of the body and repeat the sound 1 to 3 times aloud or silently.

Chakra Location Association Mantra
First Chakra (base of the spine) survival instincts LAAM
Second Chakra (sacral area) sensuality, creative inspiration VAAM
Third Chakra (solar plexus, navel) personal power, ego RAAM
Fourth Chakra (center of chest) unconditional love, compassion YAAM
Fifth Chakra (throat) creativity HAAM
Sixth Chakra (between eyebrows) insight, inspiration KSHAAM
Seventh Chakra (crown, top of head) spiritual union OMM

General Mantras

The following are mantras that could be used at any time to enliven the qualities contained within their vibration.

  • Shanti (shan tee): to restore peace and harmony
  • Anandam (aan an dam): to restore inner joy and contentment

Enlightenment Mantras

Enlightenment is a state of balance, harmony, and self-awareness on all levels. Therefore, all mantras indirectly support this spiritual goal. However, the Gayatri Mantra, being the “Mother” of the wisdom of the entire creation, gives you the direct path to Enlightenment. Traditionally, it is chanted at times of transition during the day—sunrise, noon, and sunset—but it can also be chanted at any convenient time. It is best chanted a minimum of three times each session.

OM BHUR BHUVAH SUVAHA (Om Bhoor Bhoo-va Su-va-ha)
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM (Tat Sa-vee-toor Var-ayn-yam)
BARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI (Bar-go Day-vas-ya Dhee-ma-hee)
DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT (Dhee-yo Yo Nah Pra-cho-da-yaat)

Meditation Mantras

The mantras already mentioned are intended to create or support something on the active level of life, and as such, they have meanings and/or intentions associated with them.

Meditation mantras have no particular meanings or specific intentions. Their role is simply to take the awareness from activity to the inner realm of silence and infinite possibilities. These mantras re-connect you to your most fundamental level of Being and allow you to begin to restore the memory of these qualities in all areas of your life.

Techniques, such as the Chopra Center’s Primordial Sound Meditation, select the mantra most suitable to guide the student on his/her journey of spiritual awakening. As such, these mantras are only taught by qualified teachers or in our online course format.

There is a more general mantra that can be used by anyone, somewhat for this same purpose. This mantra is SO HUM. It is usually used in conjunction with the breath.

  • Sitting comfortably, with eyes closed, begin breathing normally.
  • Silently begin repeating “SO” as you breathe in and repeating “HUM” as you breathe out.
  • The use of the mantra should be easy and effortless. Whenever the attention drifts away, gently bring it back.
  • This meditation can be practiced twice daily for 15-20 minutes each sitting.

As I said, this is a vast subject but I hope this has given you glimpse into this fascinating science.

The Way of Devotion

In one of my meditations last year I was presented with a question. “Can you see a world without conflict and war?”  This question led me to reflect upon such a world.  It came to me as I listened to the news about Syria this morning that there has always been a war going somewhere in the world since I was born.

War has not been part of my personal life, but thousands of Canadian soldiers have died in wars overseas so I am able to live in a peaceful county.  I am so deeply grateful and humbled.  Tomorrow, we remember and honour those Canadian soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge in France in the 1st World War. But war continues…affects millions…is killing children.

I have been deeply blessed by living in Canada, so perhaps I can begin to envision a world without war, to envision a world that so many fought and died so we could have an opportunity to create peaceful living.  “Can you see a ‘world’ without conflict and war?” These are the words that I wrote after reflecting and meditating on this question and an answer unfolded.

A world without conflict and war ~ A place of devotion ~

“A world without conflict and war is a place where each person lives in devotion to one another.  Each one is precious with gifts to offer and to receive in humble gratitude.  There is a flow of energy in this world that only supports love.  From love…all else flows to create a place of devotion.  A place where each person says, “I am devoted to you and my life extends and creates from that devotion” The devotional ‘way’ comes from a loving heart, a center of harmony, joy, excitement and creativity.

This way of devotion is personal for each being. It is ever growing, ever moving, ever transforming as there is a devotion to self-knowing, self-acceptance, self-loving that flows into each cell, into each soul.  A cycle of devotion unfolds from one to another and all embrace the light of devotional love and light.”

Devotional Light

I am devoted

See only your perfection

Beauty, love and grace

By Jane Rosalea Brown

I know that some of you who are reading this will have the reaction that this world can never exist, that people will never change, that I am an idealist, a dreamer.  Yes, I am.

I can understand those views but our world will never change if we do not have a beginning, a vision, a dream and a deep understanding of what kind of major transformation has to occur to create a world of peace, social justice, compassion, integrity and freedom for all.  It is a huge transformation…a movement into forgiveness…letting go of old ways that perpetuate conflict…and begin to love one another.  Each person must be willing to heal, to transform and to have a deep understanding of a way of devotion.

How do we begin this transformation?  I would like to share the Reiki precepts/affirmations for all Reiki practitioners and teachers that were given by Dr. USUI, the founder of Reiki practice, to bring this way of devotion into our daily lives.

“THE REIKI AFFIRMATIONS

Just for today,

I will not worry

I will not be angry

I will do my work honestly

I will give thanks for my many blessings

I will be kind to my neighbour and all living things

May these words assist you today to live with devotion to yourself, to your loved ones and to others.  In devotion there is freedom to love, to give service and to join our hearts with all beings, all nature and spirit.

Peacefully, Jane

Slide1

My passion is sharing my journey with others, sharing the meditations that I find beautiful and enlightening, staying open to new ‘ways’ and thoughts by allowing old ones to fade or simply be in the past, being fascinated by what I receive in my meditations, and being thankful for what I received from others…all the love and compassion.

Each new year, I reflect on where I am in my life in this moment. This new year I have a lovely sense of being home, both physically and spiritually.  Today, my thoughts are about what I have to offer this year.  How can I create a more peaceful place for my family, friends, clients and community.  I begin my Peaceful Way Gatherings in Meaford on January 21st.  These are two hour workshops for relaxation, spiritual exploration and peaceful meditations that assist us to open to our own self-mastery.  I love sharing with our small group of participants who are opening to new ways to experience their lives.  It is exciting to see people transform and to be part of their wondrous journey. Please contact me if you are interested in joining this group on Wednesday afternoons.

Long ago in my meditations, I received insight that all I need to solve my life problems was available to me each day…in my outer world and in my inner meditative world.  The advantage of seeking within is that my mind and heart do not have all the distractions of my outer life.   When I meditate,I have the opportunity to reflect, listen, visualize and connect to spirit…to the unknown wonders of the universe…to love and peace.  Learning to meditate has been a wonderful gift to me, one that has given me strength and courage to make changes and create new ways for myself.

I often turn to my book, In Silence, Discovering Self through Meditation, as a source of comfort and a reminder of the power of meditation.  Many of my insights that I have received over the years are shared in my book.  They are simple insights and may be overlooked by their simplicity, but I know how powerful they are and how they changed my life.

This year has begun with all of us seeking sense of what is happening around the world.  Your inner light and love can bring you comfort and peace during these transformative times.  We all need to transform our lives to experience a Peaceful Way.  It may seem impossible to visualize a global transformation but one by one we are making the choice for peace in our world and in our daily lives.  We are doing it for our self and for our children and grandchildren.  Begin your day with prayer and meditation.  Be a carrier of light, love and peace and your personal life will transform before your eyes.  Allow your passion to unfold.

A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.” Author unknown

A moment of happiness, you and I sitting on the verandah,

apparently two, but one in soul, you and I.

We feel the flowing water of life here, you and I,

with the garden’s beauty and the birds singing.

Rumi
When we can give our love to others, truly give our love without any agenda…without any conditions on our love, we cultivate the kind of relationship we would like to have with others. Unconditionally love transforms and brings light into our hearts. It is something each of us is here to learn and to experience.  We do not have to try to change another person – just love them.  They will benefit so much by our love.  Everyone wants to be loved!

My life transforms in magical and unexpected ways.

Obstacles that once seemed impassable, now seem insignificant. I rise effortlessly above all challenges, to a place of serenity and knowing. My path forward is becoming clearer and clearer.

Every day, in every way, my life becomes more and more harmonious. I trust in the natural flow of life. I resist nothing, I yearn for nothing. I gratefully receive all that comes my way.

My consciousness is not bound by time or space. Like the universe itself, I am limitless. I am a part of a vast, unified wholeness.

In your silence is your knowing

With changing perception comes a new view

Transforming, blossoming with tenderness

Filled with creative thoughts within your sacred space

Emerging as abundant success and joy

Jane Rosalea Booth, In Silence, Discovering Self through Meditation

Meditation and prayer returns me to a place of inner freedom, to a place of the heart. From this place, I can be clear about my responses to my life problems or situations. In this manner I can create a life based on love rather than fears. My fears separate me from my Divine source. So it is important for me to release and clear my fears by surrendering them, turning them over to God/Goddess to assist my healing and to enhance my understanding and knowing.

Then I receive the benefits of meditation – reducing stress, lowering my blood pressure, enhancing my spiritual growth and inner peace and providing clarity of my intentions and desires. I haven’t found anything else that works as well as meditation.

As you move more deeply into your discovery and remembrance of your true Self, your life will become enriched with love and happiness. By developing daily meditative practices you will be able to view life in a positive, well-balanced manner.

My Peaceful Way workshops, seminars and retreats are dedicated to assisting you to find your life purpose, abundance and inner peace. The time is now. This is the time for all of us to discover our Peaceful Way. The world needs each of us to make this transformation. Take the time to join me for an exciting exploration of your journey as you create your peaceful way. Your life will transform in wondrous ways!

Peace and joy,

Jane

As I enjoyed the full moon last evening, I was in awe of its beauty and brightness.  What a beacon in the night sky!  The moon’s energy is transformative and calling us to express our compassion and love.

Today is the beginning on a new month.  September is always a transformative month with children returning to school and nature beginning to show the fall colours of our trees and plants. In my book, In Silence, Discovering Self through Meditation, there is a daily guide of inspirational thoughts.  The First Day is about creating a day of change.  How can I create something different today? Perhaps a change of attitude or a new perspective will occur or I’ll draw on my sketch pad with my water colour pencil crayons. I’m going to be aware of new things today and see what changes occur.

From In Silence, words from a meditation –

“First Day

Create a Day of Change

Be open and aware

See life as an adventure, a journey

Into oneness, into love

Into joy

Enjoy the unfolding mystery” By Jane Rosalea Booth

Meditation takes us deeper into the mystery…and I’m loving this unfolding mystery.

Have a loved filled day,

Jane
