A Peaceful Way 2018 Fall Newsletter

It has been awhile since I have written a Peaceful Way Newsletter, but things are moving along in Meaford. There have been some changes…I changed to my maiden name – Jane Rosalea Brown, (married name is Robertson), but mostly I am following my ‘bliss’ as the saying goes. My Conscious Aging workshops sure revealed to me how important it is to really love what you are doing!

Aging is a wondrous thing!  It does come with some wisdom…many things that my parents tried to share and I didn’t listen to them, but my greatest awareness or wisdom has been to discover the power of love…love of self, love of others, love of nature and love of the spirit that flows through all life. I still do not know what ‘God’ is or how life began, but that’s okay, I am accepting and so grateful for all my life experiences of ups and downs.  I may hold on to some ‘issues’ or anger from long ago but working on ‘letting go’.  The older I get I realize how foolish it is to hold on…hold on to what?  There is only the present moment.

So I am filling my days with doing things I like to do and serving in my community in small ways.  I am meeting new people who seem to ‘fit’ and ‘flow’ with me and what a blessing to be with them.  I am connecting with my old friends whom I love and there seems to be no separation in our love and friendship, it is always full of laughter and love and shared heart aches that life brings.  Each day my husband Ian and I enjoy the beauty of our area!

I have not given up on facilitating groups or sacred circles, but I am enjoying being part of a group where the younger women are facilitators and share their wisdom, challenges and hopes for the future.  Being an elder, a mother and a grandmother is a lovely thing and a time just to be who I am…after all these years of searching.  I think it is about accepting myself and seeing my beauty beyond the physical and what I am finding is that I am part of the mystery, part of the universe, part of creation and will always be…

What a colourful fall we are having in Meaford and Grey County.  But as I look out my window into the forest, I can see many bare trees and know it is a sign of colder weather ahead.  Nature prepares us, gives us signals, but often in our busy lives, we fail to notice signals that assist us to live a more loving and healthy life.

Something moves us to go deeper

and deeper into our consciousness

until we finally listen.

Then who we are is truly revealed.

Within, is a place of beauty

always presence

infinite wisdom

eternal love.

I look forward to seeing you for a Reiki/Sound and/or Peaceful Way spiritual session,

May we all live with compassionate mindfulness and love each day,

Peacefully, Jane

Guest Article ~ 7 Simple Mantras for Healing and Transformation

woman meditating

Everything in creation is, at its most refined level, sound or vibration. Every tree, every flower, every part of your body has its own unique vibration. Even the qualities you express in your life such as happiness, joy, abundance, and love are vibrations.

When you are healthy, happy, and vibrant, these vibrations are harmonizing with each other like a magnificent cosmic symphony. However, if the vibration of any area becomes distorted, the harmony breaks down, leading to a lack of wholeness and some discomfort in your life. Many forms of healing are based on knowing the correct sound or vibration and reintroducing it into that area, whereby you can restore the balance, harmony, and comfort once again.

Nature itself is full of sounds—birds singing, the wind blowing through the trees, waves breaking on the beach, innocent children laughing, and so many more. Unfortunately, for much of our time nowadays, we separate ourselves from nature. When you spend time in nature, listening to these sounds, your physiology becomes harmonized with the rhythms and flow of nature.

All traditions of the world have used sound for healing, whether the beating of a drum, a bell, a gong, or a sacred chant. The ancient Vedic Tradition of India has taken this a step further, exploring and refining the use of sound over thousands of years to formulate it into the Vedic Science of Mantras.

Mantras are specific sounds or vibrations whose effects are known. When either chanted aloud or repeated silently, they can create a desired effect in any area of your physiology or life—for healing, transformation, and inner awakening. This is, of course, a vast subject and there are mantras for everything from curing snakebites to spiritual awakening. It would take a whole lifetime to master this wisdom; however, we’ll discuss a few of the more practical uses here.

Japa

Japa means the repetition of a mantra so it encompasses all uses of mantras. However, Japa is most commonly associated with a fixed number of repetitions of a mantra. Usually a string of beads, known as a Mala, with a set number of beads would be used to keep count—one repetition per bead. Traditionally, most Malas have 108 “counter” beads and a “guru” bead used to indicate where to begin and end. Sometimes shorter malas with 54 or 27 beads can be used with longer mantras.

Using the Mala will often involve making a commitment. Let’s say you have a particular obstacle in your life. Knowing the mantra to help harmonize that situation, you might choose to repeat it 108 times (one Mala) for the next 30 days.

Deity Mantra

There are literally thousands of deities in the Eastern traditions, each associated with a different attribute and each having its own mantra, which invokes that attribute. For a Hindu, repeating one of these mantras would be a form of worshipping that deity. However, for those not so religiously inclined, the deities and their attributes should be viewed in their subtler context, as archetypal energies.

These energies are all within you, either dormant or in a state of imbalance or balance. When they are dormant, you may experience a lack in that area; when out of balance, you may experience some disruption; and when in balance, you may enjoy harmony and fulfillment.

By repeating one of these mantras, you can activate and harmonize its effects in all areas of your life. A simple deity mantra is:

  • GAM (gaam) – For removing obstacles and blockages and bringing wisdom in your life.

Healing Mantras

As we’ve discussed, everything is sound and any discomfort or disease is a distortion of the sound in some area of the body. Reintroducing the correct sound helps to restore the harmony in that area. Healing mantras are normally repeated with the attention in the area of discomfort—or, you could say, directing the vibration to where it is needed.

There are some powerful healing mantras, which are best learned from a qualified teacher; however, here are some of the simpler ones:

  • For the sinuses: Mmmmm
  • For the ears: Nnnnnnn
  • For the eyes: Eeemmm
  • For the throat: Gaa Gha
  • For the jaw: Yaa Yu Yai

The vowels sounds can also be used for healing.

  • Aaa
  • Eeeee
  • Eye
  • Ooooo
  • Uuuuuu

These are non-local, meaning you can chant one of them and direct its vibration wherever you choose.

Chakra Mantras

Consciousness is transforming into matter at every point in the Universe, but is more lively in certain places. On the earth, we call these energy centers a vortex; in the body, we call them chakrasChakrasaren’t physical, but you can imagine the main seven in the body located along the spine. Each reflects different qualities in your life. For most people, their chakras are blocked or stuck, diminishing the flow of energy supporting those particular qualities or over-emphasizing them.

By putting your attention in the area of each chakra and chanting the mantra associated with it, you can begin to enliven the chakra and release its qualities in your life. There are several different sets of mantras for the chakras, the following set is for general everyday use. It’s important to do the whole set rather than just focusing on one or two. Starting with the lowest (first) chakra, bring your attention to that area of the body and repeat the sound 1 to 3 times aloud or silently.

Chakra Location Association Mantra
First Chakra (base of the spine) survival instincts LAAM
Second Chakra (sacral area) sensuality, creative inspiration VAAM
Third Chakra (solar plexus, navel) personal power, ego RAAM
Fourth Chakra (center of chest) unconditional love, compassion YAAM
Fifth Chakra (throat) creativity HAAM
Sixth Chakra (between eyebrows) insight, inspiration KSHAAM
Seventh Chakra (crown, top of head) spiritual union OMM

General Mantras

The following are mantras that could be used at any time to enliven the qualities contained within their vibration.

  • Shanti (shan tee): to restore peace and harmony
  • Anandam (aan an dam): to restore inner joy and contentment

Enlightenment Mantras

Enlightenment is a state of balance, harmony, and self-awareness on all levels. Therefore, all mantras indirectly support this spiritual goal. However, the Gayatri Mantra, being the “Mother” of the wisdom of the entire creation, gives you the direct path to Enlightenment. Traditionally, it is chanted at times of transition during the day—sunrise, noon, and sunset—but it can also be chanted at any convenient time. It is best chanted a minimum of three times each session.

OM BHUR BHUVAH SUVAHA (Om Bhoor Bhoo-va Su-va-ha)
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM (Tat Sa-vee-toor Var-ayn-yam)
BARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI (Bar-go Day-vas-ya Dhee-ma-hee)
DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT (Dhee-yo Yo Nah Pra-cho-da-yaat)

Meditation Mantras

The mantras already mentioned are intended to create or support something on the active level of life, and as such, they have meanings and/or intentions associated with them.

Meditation mantras have no particular meanings or specific intentions. Their role is simply to take the awareness from activity to the inner realm of silence and infinite possibilities. These mantras re-connect you to your most fundamental level of Being and allow you to begin to restore the memory of these qualities in all areas of your life.

Techniques, such as the Chopra Center’s Primordial Sound Meditation, select the mantra most suitable to guide the student on his/her journey of spiritual awakening. As such, these mantras are only taught by qualified teachers or in our online course format.

There is a more general mantra that can be used by anyone, somewhat for this same purpose. This mantra is SO HUM. It is usually used in conjunction with the breath.

  • Sitting comfortably, with eyes closed, begin breathing normally.
  • Silently begin repeating “SO” as you breathe in and repeating “HUM” as you breathe out.
  • The use of the mantra should be easy and effortless. Whenever the attention drifts away, gently bring it back.
  • This meditation can be practiced twice daily for 15-20 minutes each sitting.

As I said, this is a vast subject but I hope this has given you glimpse into this fascinating science.

Peaceful Path Personal Sound Healing

Sound was the earliest tool used by humans for vibrational healing. Mothers used their voices to calm their babies.  When a person was hurt, they groaned.  Our bodies are vibrating all the time as we are energy beings.  Sound is a vibration, moving in waves.  Wikipedia describes sounds as  “a traveling wave which is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gs, composed of frequencies within the range of hearing and of a level sufficiently strong to be heard, or the sensation stimulated in organs of hearing by such vibrations”.  When we pull a sting on a guitar, the strings next to it vibrates from the sound produced. In the same way, our body responds to sounds around us. Sound frequencies can be a wonderful healing tool.

We each have our own likes and dislikes of music.  We know that listening to loud sounds can damage our hearing.  However, soft sounds calm and relax us.  Music affects our emotions and evoke memories.  Dance music makes us want to move and be active.   We only have to be aware of the power of sound and use it as a key to healing and to assists us to know ourselves more fully as vibrational beings.  In my holistic natural sound therapy, I use sound – tuning forks, chants, toning, drumming, rattles, bells –  for personal healing and for my clients.

Drumming:

The drum is the earliest instrument to be used for healing and communication.  Today, scientists are learning the healing properties of drumming for use in heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer treatment.

Tuning Forks:

I use sound with my Reiki sessions as it relaxes and assists in balancing my clients’ energies centers, known as chakras.  Sound is a vibrational healing and I pass tuning forks over and around the body, the body responds to these vibrations by relaxing and calming.  When our bodies are calm, they can heal naturally.

Chants:

Chanting has also been used since ancient times for healing.  Try chanting your own name or tone the vowel sounds – a, e, i,o,u  – and feel how your body responds.  Feel the sound stirring and awaking and illuminating each cell in your body.  Imagine each cell receiving love as you chant. The “Ohm” sound is wonderful to use as you begin to meditate as it opens your consciousness to the Divine as your body soothes and calms from this sound.  “Ahhh…is a sound for heart love.

Mantras:

Mantras are phrases or sentences that are repeated over and over.  The ancient Vedic teachings have many mantras to use for all areas of our lives.   I use simple ones that I make up.  Before I go to sleep I repeat “I am calm.  I am peace. I am calm. I am peace.”  Then, I drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep.  Each religion has its mantras to repeat.  Roman Catholic’s hold rosary beads as they repeat  mantras.  Hindus and Buddhist use mala beads as they repeat their sacred mantras.

Finding your own Sound

You have a natural resonance (vibration) with the harmony of the Universe.  As you meditate, ask for your own sound(s) to use for your personal healing and well-being.  Listen…and you will receive a sound or words for you.  Find your own voice.  Sing your own song.

As I use the tuning forks with clients, I chant or tone intuitively.  Before each session, I ask that I will receive the sound that will assist my client.  I am always amazed at the sounds that I receive.  They are usually short words that have no meaning to me, such as tat or wha or tume and they flow together.  I’ve learned not to question what I receive but simply share them.  My clients love them and I always look forward to new mantras or chants that I receive.

Personal Sound Awareness

Become aware of what music you are listening to each day.  Is it healthy for your body?   Listen to the sounds in your daily life and think about how they are affecting your health.  Try to get rid of loud, harsh sounds as they are harmful.  Teens think is it cool to swear and be loud, but their bodies and souls are asking for peace and kindness.

Sound Energy and Reiki Sessions

I am available weekly for Sound and for Reiki Sessions for energy balancing, relaxation and stress reduction.  I personalize the session with chants and toning to meet your needs. The sessions are 1 ½ hours in Meaford, Ontario Canada.  Please e-mail: goldenlightcentre@rogers.com    Discover how vibrational healing can improve and sustain your health and well-being.  My fee is $50.00 per session.
